I am shamelessly stealing the format from Hayden. The goal is to finish fifty books in calendar year 2006. It's likely impossible, but a guy can dream.
Effendi is the second book in a series (Pashazade was the first, Fellaheen is the third). It's a police procedural of sorts set in an alternate world Alexandria, where the First World War never happened and the Belle Epoque balance of power never died. It moves along well: it's zippy and sentimental in the way that hard-boiled fiction usually is; the characters are without exception fucked up in lurid and improbable ways; and the city itself has a palpable hyperreal presence throughout. If this is the sort of thing you like, then chances are you'll like this quite a bit.
